"To see that no one goes to bed hungry in Greene County"
The food pantry is open every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 10am-12 noon, the third Wednesdays from 4pm - 6pm.
Feeding Greene Needs Your Support!!
Feeding Greene purchased an old grocery store in April of 2020 just in time to handle the increase in families seeking our services. We are now beginning renovations on the entire building to install badly needed walk-ins for the first time ever, a stock room with a receiving area and more space to operate our Home Delivery Program.
These renovations will increase our cold storage space and our dry grocery space as well as allowing us room to spread out our work load to safely allow families back into our pantry. Renovations include new wiring to supply 3 phase for the walk-ins, widening, moving, and installing doors to accommodate moving pallets of food, general carpentry work to sheetrock walls, patch and level floors, install insulation and drop ceiling, and finish floors and paint walls, plumbing, and installation of heat and air duct work.
All of this will come at a cost of around $350,000.00 total. We currently have around $80,000 and another $25,000 secured for the walk-ins. Will you help us meet our goal of completing these renovations so that Feeding Greene can continue to meet the demands of many families in our community? Click to Donate Now. You can also mail a check to PO Box 13 Stanardsville, VA 22973
Read More… In 1995 Feeding Greene started feeding people in our community with referrals coming from local agencies like the Department of Social Services, Region Ten, Jefferson Area Board for the Aging, the Greene Health Department, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. It has been a local resource for food to some of the neediest families in our community with the guidance and partnership of local agencies already familiar with the needs of families in our county. Being a rural, bedroom community, getting food to families in need was a challenge and home deliveries have always been a part of our services. We are blessed to be in a community that sees the importance of working together to offer local resources and valuable volunteer opportunities to those in our community. It is so important in our small, rural community to offer local resources to families who might otherwise go without the help they need.
When COVID-19 came on the scene, the number of individuals being served increased 96% with the biggest increase being children ages 0-17, followed by the elderly aged 60 and over. Our Home Delivery Program increased 235% in 2020. Not only did families not feel safe coming out during COVID, but we began to get more referrals from local agencies, and we began to deliver to families in quarantine with COVID needing food. We also had to begin pre-boxing ALL of our food and serving other families safely with a drive-thru model, loading their vehicles while they stayed in their cars.
We are the main food pantry open 3 days a week for families to receive food. We work 7 days a week to pick up, organize, store, box, and distribute food in our community. We plug in volunteers of all ages, sexes, and ethnicities. Many individuals serve community service hours at our pantry. We receive volunteers from many churches, businesses, and civic groups. We have several groups of school age children that volunteer on a regular basis. Many of the very clients we serve volunteer their time and talent adding rich diversity to our pantry. The renovations are necessary to store enough food to keep up with the many new families that continue to seek our assistance each week. We are entirely supported by those in our community that give of their own free will to keep us going. We do not receive any federal, state, or local government support. Help us get our pantry equipped to continue our valuable service to our small, rural community. Approximately 1,800 people in our community benefits from our services each month.
****IMPORTANT**** COVID 19 (Coronavirus) response from Feeding Greene
As things continue to develop we are continuing to do our best to meet the needs of families in our area. We have been faced with unprecedented numbers of new families needing assistance during these difficult times. We will continue to welcome all who need help and provide whatever assistance we can.
Feeding Greene will be open and providing food on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings 10:00am – 12:00pm.
We have altered our process to ensure the safety of our families and our volunteers. We are pre-bagging staples and fresh produce for individuals and families.
We will be using a modified drive up/walk up system to avoid any crowds and to keep germ spread to a minimum. Please bear with us as we make these necessary changes and deal with increasing numbers. Our priority is the safety of our families and our volunteers and part of that is to ensure that families have adequate food to make it through this difficult time.
