Feeding Greene Needs Your Support!!
Feeding Greene continues to offer a vital resource to many families in our community whose lives have been and still are being profoundly impacted by COVID-19 and now the rising cost of inflation. The last 2 years have presented us with challenges and moved us in a direction to rethink and reimagine how we can best meet the needs of our community. This important work is supported largely by generous donors in and around our community. We will have greater financial challenges ahead as we seek to move beyond this pandemic into recovery where we are now allowing families back into the pantry. Our general operating costs have increased significantly throughout the pandemic and will not likely ever return to pre-pandemic levels. Your support is needed now more than ever as we work to keep our pantry shelves stocked.
Read More… In 1995 Feeding Greene started feeding people in our community with referrals coming from local agencies like the Department of Social Services, Region Ten, Jefferson Area Board for the Aging, the Greene Health Department, and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department. It has been a local resource for food to some of the neediest families in our community with the guidance and partnership of local agencies already familiar with the needs of families in our county. Being a rural, bedroom community, getting food to families in need was a challenge and home deliveries have always been a part of our services. We are blessed to be in a community that sees the importance of working together to offer local resources and valuable volunteer opportunities to those in our community. It is so important in our small, rural community to offer local resources to families who might otherwise go without the help they need.
When COVID-19 came on the scene, the number of individuals being served increased 96% with the biggest increase being children ages 0-17, followed by the elderly aged 60 and over. Our Home Delivery Program increased 235% in 2020. Not only did families not feel safe coming out during COVID, but we began to get more referrals from local agencies, and we began to deliver to families in quarantine with COVID needing food. We also had to begin pre-boxing ALL of our food and serving other families safely with a drive-thru model, loading their vehicles while they stayed in their cars.
We are the main food pantry open 3 days a week for families to receive food. We work 7 days a week to pick up, organize, store, box, and distribute food in our community. We plug in volunteers of all ages, sexes, and ethnicities. Many individuals serve community service hours at our pantry. We receive volunteers from many churches, businesses, and civic groups. We have several groups of school age children that volunteer on a regular basis. Many of the very clients we serve volunteer their time and talent adding rich diversity to our pantry. The renovations are necessary to store enough food to keep up with the many new families that continue to seek our assistance each week. We are entirely supported by those in our community that give of their own free will to keep us going. We do not receive any federal, state, or local government support. Help us get our pantry equipped to continue our valuable service to our small, rural community. Approximately 2,400 people in our community benefits from our services each month.
Feeding Greene will be open and providing food on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings 9:00am – 12:00pm.
